Dewsbury Heritage Site Approved For Development

A heritage building, situated on Westgate in Dewsbury, will be restored to its former glory thanks to planning permission that has been secured by Martin Walsh Architectural (MWA) on behalf of Saleem Holdings.

Existing site: 6-10 Westgate, Dewsbury

6-10 Westgate will be redeveloped to accommodate retail and commercial units in line with several shop front refurbishments and renovations across the town.

Funded by Saleem Holdings, Heritage England and Kirklees Council, the property will be home to Synergy Solicitors. Additional lettable office space and a café will be introduced to the ground floor. In contrast, the upper floors will accommodate apartments to provide much-needed housing stock within the town centre location.

James Whipp, Architectural Technologist and BIM Champion at MWA, comments: “MWA has extensive experience in the renovation and refurbishment of heritage sites across the district, having already restored properties within Foundry Street and Northgate.

“We are pleased to have obtained permission to continue preserving these historic buildings, which will improve access and create usable space.

“We have worked collaboratively with Kirklees Council and Historic England to ensure that our proposal supported the vision for the area, while retaining key historical assets and features. Importantly, we had to achieve this whilst still creating an affordable development and delivering workable apartment layouts within the confines of a complex existing building structure.”
