MWA Setting The Foundations For Heeleys

Martin Walsh Architectural (MWA), the RIBA chartered firm of architects based in Dewsbury, has been appointed to support the renovation of Heeleys – the former Conservative Club and Victoria Hall in Batley.

The role of MWA

Working on behalf of Yorkshire Property Rentals Ltd, as architects, MWA will be responsible for surveying the building and preparing initial schematic proposals. Longer term, the team will manage the planning application process and prepare building regulation drawings, while also overseeing the tender and construction phases.

The proposed renovation will completely transform the structure into a hub for the local community.

What are the plans for Heeleys?

Plans for the ground floor include space for community meetings and events. A large coffee shop/restaurant, artisan bakery, florist and fresh fruit/veg deli store will also be accommodated. On the first floor, Heeleys Emporium an indoor market is proposed. The exterior will also be updated to accommodate a large car park, two pop up shop units, an exterior patio with structural canopy and children’s play area, this area will also be used to host outdoor events.

Some background information

Heeleys is named after the late John Heeley Townend, who purchased the building in September 2020. Its redesign is inspired by Victorian industrialism, the steampunk Victorian era that ran from 1837 to 1901.
